History of Russian Nuclear Industry

In August 2005 Russian Nuclear Industry celebrated its 60th anniversary. The pages of its history contain many events designated ‘the first’. Let us mention the most important of them:

1944 — first in Eurasia kilograms of pure uranium produced.
1946 — first in Eurasia research reactor F-1 started in the USSR.
1948 — first in Eurasia industrial reactor “A” with a capacity of 100 MW created in the USSR.
1949 — test of the first Soviet nuclear bomb (RDS-1), launch of the first in Eurasia research deuterium reactor TVR.
1954 — world’s first nuclear power plant with a capacity of 5 MW brought into operation (Obninsk, Moscow Region).
1956 — world’s first fast neutron reactor BR-2 with a capacity of 150 MW brought into operation.
1957 — first Soviet nuclear submarine APL K-3 launched.
1959 — world’s first nuclear-powered icebreaker commissioned ('Lenin').
1964 — first VVER-1 light water reactor with a capacity of 210 MW launched (Novovoronezh NPP).
1973 — world’s first fast neutron power reactor BN-250 launched (Shevchenko, currently — Kazakhstan)
1974 — first high-power pressure-tube reactor (RBMK type) with a capacity of 1000 MW started (Leningrad NPP).
